The award list was announced on Aug. 20 and can be viewed on the Forbes website.

America's Best-In-State Employers 2024 have been identified in an independent survey from a vast sample of over 160,000 employees working for companies employing at least 500 people within the U.S. The ranking is open to companies from all industry sectors. Around 4.4 million employer evaluations were considered. The consideration of data from three years allowed a robust differentiation between organizations that consistently perform well from those that may only have had a single good year. An employer's final score is determined on a state-by-state basis and is built upon two types of employee evaluations:

Personal Evaluations: Employees鈥 willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family.聽

Public Evaluations: Recommendations from friends and family members of employees, or members of the public who work in the same industry- also known as indirect evaluations.

Based on the study results, CSU is honored to be recognized on the Forbes list of America鈥檚 Best-In-State Employers 2024.聽

Statista publishes hundreds of worldwide industry rankings and company listings with high-profile media partners. Heddy is certified to work with CSU鈥檚 veterinary social worker Aviva Vincent, Ph.D. through Canine Companions and Animal Assisted Intervention Professionals. She will be on campus Mondays and throughout the week by request.聽

Dr. Vincent practices social work at the intersection of the human and animal bond, which is the focus of her current research, teaching and work within the community.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know if Rune and Thor knew they wanted another friend, but their human-handlers were whole-heartedly inviting for more paws on campus,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 started at CSU in the social work department a year ago and knew that it was important to have a therapy dog with me on campus.鈥

Heddy was puppy-raised by a volunteer with Canine Companions with the intent of becoming a service dog. When she graduated to training at the main facility (also known as 鈥減uppy college鈥), she demonstrated that she had a greater interest in bringing joy to all people, instead of being dedicated to one person. After being released from service dog school, they matched her with Dr. Vincent through their therapy dog program.聽

鈥淲e鈥檝e been training together since February of 2024,鈥 said Dr. Vincent. 鈥淭ogether, we have certifications through Canine Companions Therapy Dog program, Animal Assisted Intervention Professionals, and AKC Canine Good Citizen - yes, Heddy is a very good citizen.鈥

With the support of 精东传媒 University Police Chief Beverly Pettrey, who oversees the therapy dog program through the CSU police department, as well as. Chris Mallett, Ph.D. and Dean Stephanie Brooks of the College of Health, Heddy was approved to join the campus community and officially began on Aug. 27.

Another unique aspect about Rune and Thor is that their handlers are CSU police officers and that the actual therapy dog program began within the department.

鈥淲hile it is (more) common to see therapy dogs in police and fire stations, it is not common for an officer 鈥 let alone two 鈥 to have the role of therapy dog handler, year-round, to serve a university,鈥 said Dr. Vincent. 鈥淎n intentional aspect of the program was to bridge a relationship between the CSU officers and the campus community, which is evident from the responses we received from the survey.鈥

SURVEY SAYS鈥

Recently, a therapy dog survey completed on campus more than proved that our furry friends play a major role in the overall health and wellbeing of everyone on campus. Close to 1,400 students, faculty and staff took the time to answer a short 10-question survey over the course of April and May to provide their thoughts on the benefits of having Rune, Thor and now Heddy on campus. 鈥

鈥淏ecause research requires structure, we often hear about the impact of therapy dogs during midterms/finals or serving a very specific group of people, like residents in a nursing department,鈥 said Dr. Vincent. 鈥淥ur study is different because we asked all members of the campus community - students, faculty and staff - about their experiences with Rune and Thor. The survey sought to explore where the dogs are impactful, why people enjoy being with them and what they want more of.鈥

She also explained the context was important because there is evidence that the dogs receive innately positive responses, so the questions were not limited to something as simple as, 鈥淒o you like the dogs?鈥 but rather, 鈥淲hy do you like the dogs?鈥

鈥淭his nuance is novel and helped us understand the most important factors of CSU鈥檚 therapy dog program,鈥 said Dr. Vincent. 鈥淚n the words of respondents, the dogs provide catharsis and de-stressing, mental health support and remembering home (connection and belonging).鈥

The survey was accessed 1,392 times with 1,038 complete responses. Of the respondents, 18 percent never met the dogs, 15 percent met them once, 39 percent met them two-to-five times, 13 percent met them six-to-10 times and 14 percent met them more than 10 times.聽

The words 鈥渇inals鈥 and 鈥渕idterms鈥 were only referenced 40 times. This is important and interesting since most therapy dog programs focus on volunteers from the community bringing their therapy dogs to campus during finals. What this shows us is that students, staff, and faculty seek out, visit, and benefit from Thor and Rune year-round.聽

Here鈥檚 what some participants had to say (edited for brevity):

鈥淟ast semester, I was suffering from anxiety. I was walking through the Student Center one day and felt like I was barely hanging on when I spotted Rune. My dog at home is usually my safety net. I went straight toward Rune and just sat on the floor with him, and he seemed to sense how I felt. He kept me from slipping into a public panic attack that day.鈥

鈥淒uring my initial days of joining the college, I missed my dog at home a lot. When I first saw Rune during an event at the Wolstein Center, I became emotional, as it reminded me of my dog. Rune gave me a sense of comfort when I interacted with him.鈥

A peer-reviewed publication聽 based on the survey is currently in the works and will be made available to those interested when it is published. This includes tangible elements such as public art, lighting, and mapping, as well as intangible aspects like curating immersive experiences for both visitors and residents.

CSU: How would you describe the connections you have made with the faculty and staff at CSU?

CB: The connections I鈥檝e made with CSU faculty and staff have been some of the most rewarding ones I鈥檝e made. I鈥檒l carry these relationships with me for the rest of time! In late 2020, I had the opportunity to join the (now-defunct) College of Sciences and Health Professions as a Student Assistant. While I initially had limited knowledge of higher education, the advisors and staff were incredibly supportive, guiding me through various challenges and helping me navigate the opportunities available at CSU. This experience not only enriched my personal growth but also enabled me to share valuable resources and insights with my peers, which I found immensely fulfilling.

CSU: How has 精东传媒 inspired you for your future?

CB: Attending 精东传媒 has truly been a transformative experience for me. CSU is not just a place of learning but a catalyst that has propelled me to think beyond conventional boundaries. The faculty and resources at CSU have consistently encouraged me to set ambitious goals and strive for excellence. Moreover, through various programs and networking opportunities, the university has introduced me to a myriad of career paths I hadn't explored before. This exposure has been invaluable in shaping my aspirations and providing me with a clearer direction for my future endeavors. In essence, 精东传媒 has not only educated me but inspired me to reach for the stars and seize the countless opportunities that lie ahead.

CSU: How do you think you have fulfilled the CSU mission (empowering others, creating knowledge, engaging our community, shaping our world)?

CB: While I feel that the pursuit of these values is an ongoing journey rather than a destination, I have experienced numerous instances throughout my academic career where I've embodied the CSU mission. One such instance was through my involvement in the Levin Mentoring program, where I built a cohort of over 40 students, each paired with a mentor tailored to their interests and career goals. This initiative allowed me to empower others by fostering meaningful connections.

Moreover, I actively contributed to knowledge creation through my Senior Capstone project. Serving as a Project Manager for the Cleveland Public Library (CPL), I spearheaded the generation of ideas and recommendations for programming, activities, and services, thereby enriching the community's access to resources and opportunities.

Engaging our community has been a fundamental aspect of my journey, exemplified by my organization of a Climate Action Planning Workshop in collaboration with the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA). This collaborative effort provided a platform for students to contribute their insights and ideas, shaping the region's inaugural climate action plan and fostering a sense of collective responsibility towards environmental sustainability.

Furthermore, my volunteerism with Mayor Justin Bibb's Transition Team allowed me to contribute to shaping priority actions for our city, underscoring my commitment to effecting positive change at the local level. As I reflect on these experiences, I am reminded that while the mission may never be fully realized, it is the collective efforts of individuals like me that propel us closer to its fulfillment, leaving a lasting impact on our communities.

Congratulations, Courtni!

Thu, 01 Aug 2024 12:58:07 +0000 6003456 25820 at #TheLand of Grand Slams & Good Vibes /news/theland-grand-slams-good-vibes

This is The Land. In 2022, the Transfer Center was relocated (and renamed Transfer Student Services) under the umbrella of recruitment in the Office of Admissions, helping to better align the transfer services CSU provides. Currently, two staff members work on advising and two work on recruitment.

鈥淲e work with students from two-year and four-year institutions who are looking to join the CSU family. Our advising team works to let the students know how their previously earned coursework will transfer over to CSU and what their path to graduation may look like,鈥 said Assistant Director of Transfer Recruitment Amanda Zacur. 鈥淥ur recruitment team is here to support the student through connecting them with our advising team, the application process and next steps once admitted to CSU.鈥

Zacur also noted that a transfer ambassador team is available on campus to help connect potential transfer students with current CSU students that have previously transferred to CSU and are familiar with the process.

鈥淭he transfer ambassadors are a great resource for our prospective students because they get the opportunity to hear from someone who has been in their shoes,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey are also someone will help them navigate all of their next steps.鈥

Although this is the first time in five years that CSU has officially received this honor, it has always been a transfer friendly destination thanks in great part to giving potential transfer students the highest level of service and guidance when making the move to CSU. That direct approach has enabled the university to have dedicated personnel just for transfer students, something other universities around the country are catching up to CSU with.

鈥淥ur Registrar鈥檚 Office does their best to take all regionally accredited credits a student has earned prior to attending CSU; and we can allow students to apply 90 credits earned at a two-year college toward their degree here at CSU,鈥 said Zacur. 鈥淥ur Honors College has two different ways for transfer students to gain entry into their college (Mandel Continuing Scholars and University Honors 精东传媒 鈥 Upper Division). And, overall, our different colleges really show support for transfer students by traveling to local community colleges to be present at transfer fairs, graduation festivals and allow for classroom presentations.鈥

The process is seamless for transfer students as the team, along with other members of the CSU community, work with local two-year colleges to establish pathways that can help students who start at the two-year institution earn their bachelor鈥檚 degree. To make things even easier, degree completion programs are available at Lakeland Community College and Lorain County Community College. CSU offers dual admission at all three local community colleges, enabling a student to take courses simultaneously at both institutions and have access to advisors at both institutions.

鈥淐SU is a welcoming environment for transfer students and, in fact, over 30 percent of our total student enrollment are transfer students. In an average year, we welcome over 1,200 new transfer students to our campus,鈥 said Zacur. 鈥淲e have our tuition guarantee, which locks tuition rates in for students based on how many credits they transfer in. We also offer multi-term registration, which allows our students to plan their entire academic year at one time, so if you are working while in school, you can know what your class schedule is going to look like.鈥

If you are a student reading this and thinking of transferring to CSU, Zacur says the best thing to do is start planning early (though it is never too late). The tutors serve as role models and teacher assistants, helping with everything ranging from homework and test preparation to helping students understand assignments which might not be in their primary or first language.

This past academic year alone, the tutors combined to achieve 6,161 youth tutoring interactions while logging over 7,400 hours.

The tutors work at community-service learning partner locations, such as the Cleveland Metropolitan School District Davis Aerospace & Maritime High School, Teen Response (known as Re:Source Cleveland), the Cleveland Heights Library and 13 additional Cleveland Public Library branches including East 131st, Fleet, Fulton, Garden Valley, Hough, Memorial-Nottingham, Mount Pleasant (remote tutoring), Rice, Rockport, Sterling, South, West Park and Woodland.

This marks the 27th year of the Office of Civic Engagement and the Cleveland Public Library community engagement partnership, 16 of which have been under the leadership of OCE Director and 精东传媒 Coordinator of Viking Corps, Anita Ruf-Young.

鈥淚 am so proud that each day in the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education's Office of Civic Engagement that I, along with program coordinator, Gabi Pridemore, are able to focus on CSU's anchor institution mission of civic engagement and on investing in the communities that surround our campus through these long-standing and impactful community service-learning partnerships with the Cleveland Public Library, CMSD, the Heights Library, the Northeast Ohio Boys & Girls Clubs and others,鈥 she said. 鈥淣ot only do these programs address youth literacy and academic achievement, but also demonstrate how we at CSU believe in utilizing our resources and skills to serve and engage our neighbors while our students benefit by developing their resumes, career ready skills for their future careers, and earning money to help fund their education/living expenses.鈥

Ruf-Young also added that the tutors enjoy the work so much that they continue to return year-after-year and relay in their evaluations that they feel invested in these meaningful jobs through the OCE.

鈥淭he students really develop or even enhance their cultural awareness,鈥 she said. 鈥淎dditionally, it equips them with the necessary skills to work in diverse communities.鈥

Sherri Jones is the Literacy and Education Coordinator at Cleveland Public Library. She says the work each tutor provides is second-to-none.

鈥淭he Viking Corps staff (Anita Ruf-Young and Gabi Pridemore) work tirelessly to recruit tutors, she said. 鈥淲ithout their services, many of our students would not receive one-on-one attention in subject areas where they are underperforming.鈥澛

Jones added:

鈥淢anaging America Reads and Viking Corps CSU tutors can be a major hurdle for these large-scale programs where so many tutors are needed and we appreciate the academic support, mentorship and positive social-emotional connections the CSU tutors provide our students.鈥

Forrest Lykins, who serves as the branch manager of the West Park Branch of the Cleveland Public Library, agrees that having the tutors CSU provides is not only a major need, but their assistance has gone above and beyond.

鈥淭he tutors are so needed here [and] this program with CSU has brought in community members that would not otherwise come to the library,鈥 he said. 鈥淚n particular, the CSU students have assisted children of immigrant families facing language barriers that their parents cannot help them with.鈥

Each of the 17 community service-learning sites nominated seven tutors for an Outstanding Tutor award in recognition of their community service. The Fort Hill Earthwork Complex is a triple earthen embankment with ditches that seal off the eastern side of a steep sided plateau some 100 feet above the Rocky River. The idea of working here began as a child when my neighbor used to take me to this site as a young boy. I was always mystified by who may have built this earthwork and when. So, after doing local Northeast Ohio archaeology for over 40 years, this site was always on my bucket list. When I was looking for a place to conduct an archaeological field school in 2017, I decided to contact the Cleveland Metroparks to inquire about an archaeological permit. After granting me one, we started doing geophysics at the earthworks in late 2016 and began our first full season of excavations in the summer of 2017.

CSU: What was the process (where to go, what to dig, what to look for)?
PW: My first major plan was to use geophysics (a non-invasive way to look below the surface of the ground for prehistoric and historic magnetic anomalies) on the earthwork itself. I thought if I could find magnetic anomalies, I might be able to excavate them to find clues as to the who, what, where, when, and how the earthwork functioned and determine a date and assign cultural affiliation. After conducting a series of geophysical surveys, they revealed more than two dozen major anomalies. These anomalies usually indicate burnt or oxidized soils, such as those commonly found in typical fire hearths or some other fire feature. After identifying two large features, we decided to excavate them in 2017. The first test unit was located atop the western-most earthen embankment.

Our excavations revealed prehistoric cultural material just a few centimeters below the surface, featuring a scattering of fire, cracked rock and charcoal. Typically, what we find at earthwork sites like Fort Hill is evidence of ritually burning. The Native Americans would clear the land, dig down to bedrock and then conduct a burning ritual to consecrate the area prior to mound building. We ended up finding evidence of that burning. Charcoal from that unit produced a radiocarbon date of between 360 and 156 BCE. This date falls in a time known as the Early Woodland Period (1,000-100 BCE) and the culture we associate with this time period is the Adena.

From just this one test unit, we could figure how old the earthwork was and who built it. The second test unit we dug that year was in the easternmost ditch and we wanted to know if the ditch once held water, since many earthwork sites include water features. We know from historic tribes of the Eastern Woodlands that water features were often used to prevent evil spirits from entering sacred places. And we discovered that the builders brought up a certain clay from the riverbank to line the bottom of these three ditches and thus, they indicate that water filled these ditches when the earthwork was in use.

Then at the same time, we began an extensive mapping survey of the earthwork and surrounding area, and we discovered two, very eroded, but still visible, small circular mounds west of the earthwork which likely served as a gateway or entry way into the earthwork itself. The discovery of these two unreported additional mounds gives credence that this was not just an earthwork, but an earthwork complex. Subsequently, we think there may be additional earthen embankments at the west end of Fort Hill too. We are currently investigating these embankments.

CSU: What were some of your findings and what did it mean?

PW: In addition to the two new mounds, we also discovered additional prehistoric evidence of posts in the wooded area west of the earthwork. Again, additional geophysics in the woods west of the earthwork in 2018 and 2019 revealed more magnetic anomalies in this area. We excavated a few of them and they produced similar dates to those revealed in 2017. One post in particular was located about 30 meters due west of the centerline between the two gateway mounds. This was very curious since it appeared to be the remains of a lone post. The post was obviously gone, but when the post was removed in antiquity, they filled it in with trash. In this case with fire cracked rock and charcoal which produced another early date.

During our first season in 2016, we saw something truly amazing. While at the site during the spring equinox we noticed that the sun rose directly through the centerline of the gateway. The post that we excavated marks this centerline spot perfectly and so we think that the purpose of the earthwork functioned as a gigantic astronomical observatory designed to mark the yearly equinoxes.

We know from other major earthwork complexes such as the Newark Earthworks, that many of the mounds and earthen structures located their mark important astronomical phenomena and so Fort Hill appears to function in much the same way. We suspect that this was its intended ritual/religious use since we have found no evidence of people living on or near the earthwork complex. To date, we have found no utilitarian artifacts to suggest that people were living full time up on Fort Hill, which coincides nicely with our findings that this earthwork marked sacred space. We suspect that the ancient builders of this earthwork, living somewhere near the Fort Hill plateau, would meet on important astronomical events like the arrival of spring or fall which correspond to the planting or harvesting seasons. They may have also come together here for other important events like deaths or marriages or other similar events. We have found no evidence that anyone is buried here which also suggests a ritual usage for the earthwork.

CSU: What is some history regarding this site?

PW: Well, we are currently writing the history of this site based on our investigations. I鈥檝e published three major reports that chronicle our findings at Fort Hill and so we are the first to really tell the story of the who, what, where, when and how of this important archaeological site. This is the only known earthwork complex in all the Cleveland Metroparks and so we are writing the history and telling the story of this site for the first time. The Metroparks have embraced our investigations and are happy we are telling Fort Hill鈥檚 story. I give numerous lectures every year for the Metroparks and for their annual First Peoples Day celebration in early November.

CSU: Any other comments or interesting info you would like to share?

PW: As our investigations continue, we hope to have new data to help further tell the story of Fort Hill. As for CSU鈥檚 role, I beg you to find another hands-on program where students get the opportunity for this kind of engagement. We epitomize Engaged Learning, and my students all have unique opportunities to discover history firsthand. Where else can students excavate, discover, and hold ancient artifacts for the first time in over 2300 years? I鈥檝e been conducting archaeological investigations at numerous sites across NE Ohio with more than 120 CSU students since 2008. Many of my students have go on to prestigious graduate programs across the US to study archaeology and I have also had numerous students hired by major archaeology firms who are stationed across the country.

In addition to all of this, I have personally obtained nine Undergraduate Summer Research Awards for my students to conduct archaeological investigations with me. We have also been the happy recipients of receiving several first-place awards for our posters at the annual USRA poster day. Thus, these grants are important to our students, and we are grateful for this support from CSU. Finally, we have hosted numerous annual archaeological symposiums here at CSU where we present our findings and those of noted local archaeologists who also present their latest findings.

And of course, our own CSU students have also presented their archaeological research at these events as well. The BorderLight fest is one of the best theatre festivals in Cleveland and I have a personal connection to it. It celebrates the independent, the fringe, the weird. I had performed a whopping eight-and-a-half minutes of stand up in the 2022 festival in a variety show. We called it 鈥淭he Small Garden鈥, four writer-performers doing 10 minutes of whatever they wanted. I'd designed the posters for that which featured an unclothed humanoid figure being levitated into the sky with a sunflower growing out of its belly button, and an alternative artwork that featured the same humanoid frolicking on an orange background, covered only by that same sunflower.

I sent my portfolio (which is just my website) then kind of forgot about it. When Dale Heinen (Executive and Artistic Director) and Yazmin Maldonado (Operations and Communications Manager) informed me, I'd won out of the top three, I did a backflip. I did another when they told me they'd seen my work from the festival two years prior.

CSU: Talk a little bit about your background with designing?

AM: I鈥檓 an independent designer and interdisciplinary artist. I primarily work in the literary spheres designing books, book covers, posters, editorial artworks, and printed materials. I鈥檝e always been fascinated by the printed object, especially those that hold text. A neat container where everything can live. Maybe this is my diagnosed OCD informing my poetry brain informing my knock-knock joke brain informing my everything. I am also dealing with the imposter syndrome of it all.

I didn't go to college for design; I studied creative writing at 精东传媒 (and am still a practicing poem-nerd lucky enough to have two chapbooks out from a small Syracuse-based micro-press called Ghost City Press). My only formal training was a 2-year intensive vocational program many years ago and a few design classes at CSU which were pricelessly necessary.

The rest is ingesting and collecting tons and tons and tons and tons of books, tutorials, pretty objects, paper, doilies, mailers, printing practices, crayons, manuals, indexes, newsprints, and polka records. I love polka records. They're wildly not serious in my favorite way. I鈥檓 inspired a lot by midcentury work, which is honestly a peak time for polka records. Pre-computer life. Like, you鈥檙e forced to figure it out with the utensils you have around you. The boldness of a solid, flat color. Imperfections of offset printing. My brain is a jumbled, nonlinear mess with range of inspirations from a mix of work and philosophies by the humans Tibor Kalman, Paul Rand, Peter Mendelsund, Na Kim, Pierre Mendell, Bruno Munari, Lanny Sommese, David Pearson, Saul Bass, Fred Troller, Heinz Edelmann, Grapus, Leonard Cusden, Bob Gill, Bob Cobbing and Toshio Saeki (among hundreds of others I admire).

I think it鈥檚 important for me to approach everything from a narrative perspective, no matter how abstract, just for my brain to justify it. I guess that sounds bad, but I mean, like, the "secrets" of something, however blurry they may be. What is hidden in this "why". I will annoyingly say: design is poetry and jokes and literature in its processing and its execution. It鈥檚 less about pretty pictures and more thinking about deleting a period and then going back and forth for hours, thinking of where a breath should be.

Living in the world of something. It's literary in its structure, or at least in the tools it uses: narrative intention, rhythm, rhyme, semantic relationship, connections (to audience, to self, to content, to form), logic within the bounds presented. (I realize I am a big proponent of lists...). I feel like design work is something to be interpreted, just as text is. (I think I just said a bunch of circular nonsense, but that's alright because it's the weekend as I write this!)

CSU: What was the inspiration behind your design?

AM: BorderLight is a festival, with tons of different kinds of plays happening all day for four days in various historic theatres. It鈥檚 a magical beacon, a Warped Tour but with better costumes. From their site: 鈥淏orderLight鈥檚 mission is to present innovative theatre that inspires, builds cross-cultural understanding and celebrates the diversity of the human experience.鈥 In early conversations about the artwork, we discussed how this event acts as a cultural seed and how this fest has an experimental spirit embracing the nontraditional.

The key artwork utilizes and bends public domain images in the form of a mixed-media collage-illustration. Which is what theatre is for, to see new perspectives, right? The mixed medium of collage allows textures and compositional relationships to mesh nicely which illustrates, I think importantly, an emulsification between the traditional, the communal, and the experimental into a new spectacle-aioli, just as this festival does. There鈥檚 a wide variety/mixing of performance, so I thought a lot about clowns, plays creating reality, community as invitation, swimming, puppets, paper dolls, seeds, flowers, water, sweat, pranks, the circus, and, for some reason, ballroom dancing (mostly the very classic romantic idea of biting a flower).

Prominently looming in the background is a young Marsden Hartley, an American poet a painter inspired by international works. I felt that type of spirit could be a host of the of the key composition, or a type of showman in the shadows. Working with vintage matchboxes, a swim team of aerobic water droplets formed as a sort of collaborative concierge to the festival, the clowning flower brooch a fountain of magic, its vinery climbing up the audience. Theatre is a kind of water, and an electrolysis happens when we all participate in it. This celebration of theatre is a wide portal-pond that focuses in on the culturally expressive and the fringe-tastically strange.

CSU: Anything else to add?

AM: Grab tickets to the festival July 24-27!

OH YEAH 鈥 I have to shamelessly (or shamefully, however you want to see it) plug Cleveland Review of Books, a magazine of literary criticism for which I am (somehow) the Art Director. Really cool work from really cool people deconstructing and embracing the critical form.

Tue, 18 Jun 2024 15:25:43 +0000 6003456 25786 at CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY AND CLEVELAND LEADERSHIP CENTER WORKING TOGETHER TO ENHANCE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND COMMUNITY CONNECTION /news/csu-clc-partnership

Historic Collaboration Marks CLC鈥檚 First-ever Higher Education Partnership

精东传媒 University (CSU) and the Cleveland Leadership Center (CLC) are proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership intended to develop the next generation of local leaders through learning and community engagement opportunities.聽

CLC鈥檚 first-ever Higher Education Partnership builds on the success of its Campus Cleveland program鈥攚hich attracts and retains college-age students across the region鈥攁nd aims to immerse students in local professional and civic arenas using its extensive professional networks.聽

鈥淲e are grateful to CSU for embarking with CLC on this exciting partnership,鈥 said CLC President and CEO Marianne Crosley. 鈥淚t is a powerful collaboration to advance our shared commitment to develop and inspire a new generation of leaders committed to Cleveland and poised to create positive impact across the community.鈥澛

鈥淲e are thrilled to join forces with the Cleveland Leadership Center,鈥 said Brittany Wampler, director of Career Development and Exploration at 精东传媒 University. 鈥淭his partnership is a significant step toward enriching our students' academic and professional journeys by exposing them to the vibrant community and diverse opportunities that Cleveland has to offer.鈥

Key benefits of the partnership include:

Supporting Student Success: This initiative will put CSU students in the room with leaders in business and civic organizations, enhancing their career prospects. This faculty member from the Mechanical Engineering Department was specially invited to the White House to present her groundbreaking ideas on the commercialization of energy technologies.

Dr. Younessi鈥檚 invitation to the White House was a result of her being honored with the prestigious EnergyTech University Prize (UP) from the Department of Energy (DOE). This award, inaugurated in 2024 by the DOE鈥檚 Office of Technology Transitions, involved faculty nationwide competing in two rigorous phases. Dr. Younessi was awarded one of the ten prizes in the initial Explore Phase and emerged as the first-place winner in the final Implementation Phase, leading to her invitation to the White House Roundtable on Commercializing Climate & Clean Energy Technologies.

As part of EnergyTech UP,鈥痶he faculty developed a proposal鈥痠n three phases: the Explore Phase, the Develop Phase, and the Implementation Phase, according to a press release from energy.gov.鈥疘n January, ten faculty members were selected as Faculty Explorers for their plans to increase energy entrepreneurship topics at their schools. In the second phase, Faculty Explorers and other interested faculty received access to training sessions, mentors and resources from the DOE, while working toward showing how their plans could be integrated into educational activities. In the final phase, contestants submitted an implementation plan to expand energy technology commercialization of national laboratories at universities nationwide. 聽

THE MOTIVATION

Dr. Younessi鈥檚 motivation to develop her plan was spurred by what she says are exceptional students at CSU and their consistent exploration of new methods and tools to improve their experience over the years.

鈥淚 believe that while our students are successful when entering the workforce, they have the potential to make an even stronger impact in engineering to improve the regional and national economy,鈥 said Dr. Younessi. 鈥淭o help them achieve this potential, I have been developing a plan to familiarize more students with research and encourage them to challenge themselves and find their subject of interest. My plan was a long-term project centered around the field of energy, which is my area of expertise, that also promotes diversity and multidisciplinary collaboration.鈥

Dr. Younessi pointed out that her goal for the award aligned perfectly with her plan, but it also provided a more meaningful direction and valuable tools for implementation. She also noted that it came at a perfect time, as she recently began collaborating with the DOE national laboratory at Princeton University, and that her vast knowledge and field of work created a perfect storm.

鈥淚 applied for this award because I really believed that my plan could help make a difference, although winning was certainly an exciting outcome,鈥 she said. 鈥淢any insightful meetings were offered with talented and visionary individuals, which led to my final plan, which was awarded first place in the implementation phase.鈥

Overall, the plan aims to train engineering students on innovative energy technologies and present entrepreneurship and commercialization tools. It encourages them to work in multidisciplinary and diverse groups with a common goal while earning digital badges and certificates through micro-credentials.

THE INVITATION

Dr. Younessi remembers the day clearly when she received the invitation to the White House. What came to mind was that she was deeply honored, excited, and proud that her developing plan was worthy of such incredible recognition.

鈥淭hey invited me because they saw my plan as a solution for the commercialization of energy technologies of National Labs through universities and educational institutions,鈥 she said.

As the day of the roundtable drew nearer, she acknowledged feeling the mounting pressure weighing upon her.

鈥淭he meeting participants were all experts in this field: senior members of the White House and leaders from the DOE, NSF, and some of the top universities such as MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and Princeton,鈥 said Maryam. 鈥淒uring the roundtable, I felt a high responsibility of representing CSU and other universities that have significant roles in educating engineers in the U.S. but did not have a voice in that meeting. After the talk, I was grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences, address some of our challenges, and receive validation for my ideas.鈥

Dr. Younessi presented her plan to a group of 27, including Marco Gonzales Harsha, the Principal Deputy Director of the Office of Technology Transitions in the Department of Energy; Justina Gallegos, the Deputy Director for Industrial Innovation in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; and Dr. Erwin Gianchandani, the Assistant Director of the Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships.

LOOKING AHEAD

While the White House visit is a significant milestone in her journey, Dr. Younessi continues her pursuit of greater ambitions. Her vision extends to transforming her plan into a template for universities nationwide, aimed at educating students on innovative energy research topics. Her ultimate goal is to equip students with the tools of commercialization and entrepreneurship to enhance the economic landscape.

鈥淎s the first step, I will work on implementing my plan at CSU next academic year after refining the details. I will then improve it with the feedback and help of the students and support from the mechanical engineering department, chemical engineering department, and College of Engineering,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 am very excited about this opportunity and grateful to the DOE鈥檚 Office of Technology Transitions for providing me the right tools for this plan and everyone at CSU who supported me with this effort.鈥

Read more about the White House Roundtable, implementation phase award, and EnergyTech University Prize.

Tue, 18 Jun 2024 12:03:19 +0000 6003456 25782 at Samantha Baskind, Professor of Art History, Elected to the American Academy for Jewish Research /news/samantha-baskind-professor-art-history-elected-american-academy-for-jewish-research

Distinguished Professor of Art History Samantha Baskind can add another honor to her long list of accolades over the course of her professional journey.

She was recently elected to the American Academy for Jewish Research (AAJR), an honor and lifetime appointment based on a scholar鈥檚 accomplishments and influence, much like the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and American Medieval Academy to name a few.

Founded in 1920, the AAJR Fellowship is composed of the most eminent scholars of Jewish Studies in North America. This groundbreaking program comprises eight modules that focus on essential life skills, financial literacy, workforce readiness, and personal development, aiming to fill critical gaps in resources and support. By fostering self-awareness, teaching goal-setting, and providing practical skills in budgeting, job search, and community resource navigation, the program equips participants with the tools necessary for successful independent living.

Ohio is addressing a challenging surge in its foster care population, with over 16,000 children in need of care in 2020. This issue, compounded by the opioid crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to a 30% increase in foster care needs since 2011. As the state grapples with these complexities, Ohio's institutions must develop innovative approaches to support these youth, especially those transitioning to adulthood amidst a shifting economic landscape.

Immediate and long-term support for foster youth is more critical than ever. 精东传媒s providing life-saving independent living and vocational skills are essential to mitigate the long-term effects of this growing crisis. Initiatives like the statewide Bridges program, introduced under House Bill 50, and the Ohio Reach "Foster Friendly" designation have made significant strides in offering housing and support services for those aging out of foster care. However, true long-term change requires systemic transformation beyond immediate assistance.

The Pathways to Independence program are a testament to CSU's commitment to fostering generational change and supporting foster youth beyond traditional educational frameworks. A collaborative effort between CSU's Office of Workforce Development within the Division of Continuing and Extended Education and the Pratt Center, each module is designed with specific outcomes in mind, from managing personal finances and securing housing to developing interpersonal skills and exploring diverse career fields through experiential learning. By integrating academic resources, career counseling, life skills training, and mentorship, CSU continues to be a leader in innovative support for foster youth, ensuring they can overcome past adversities and thrive in adulthood.

Since 2015, 精东传媒 University (CSU) has led transformative efforts with the Sullivan-Deckard Scholarship Opportunity 精东传媒, followed by the Pratt Fostering Success and Leadership Center in 2017, and now its "Pathways to Independence" program launching in June 2024. These initiatives solidify CSU's role as a beacon of innovation in post-secondary education. Designed to empower foster youth as they transition to adulthood, the "Pathways to Independence" program exemplifies CSU's commitment to leveraging academic resources and expertise to forge pathways extending beyond traditional support mechanisms. By integrating academic advising, career counseling, life skills training, and mentorship, "Pathways to Independence" pioneers a comprehensive approach to foster youth empowerment.

This initiative addresses the immediate needs of young individuals while preparing them for long-term success. It embodies the potential for generational change in resource deployment for foster youth. CSU's innovative approach highlights significant investments in Ohio, particularly in Cuyahoga County, aimed at transforming the lives of foster youth through education and community integration. Individuals completing the certificate will have the opportunity to move into an in-demand workforce development certificate, work with a mentor to consider degree programs, or receive additional support to find employment.

Wed, 12 Jun 2024 19:29:53 +0000 6003571 25777 at New Internship 精东传媒 Gives CSU Students an Inside Look at The Land /news/new-internship-program-gives-csu-students-inside-look-land

Beginning this fall, two students from 精东传媒's journalism program will join The Land聽each semester in providing reporting for Cleveland and surrounding cities. Perloff, Ph.D. has become synonymous with 精东传媒 University since he first stepped on campus in 1979, which is one of the many reasons why CSU proudly named him Distinguished Professor at the 2024 Spring Service Awards.

It is the highest honor conferred by the University, awarded to only one professor per year. The recognition first went to Samantha Baskind, Ph.D. of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2022, then to Milena Sterio, J.D. of the College of Law in 2023.

Dr. Perloff has spent nearly 45 years serving the CSU community as a nationally recognized scholar in communication, psychology and political science, and it鈥檚 no surprise that his accolades also span decades.聽

He was honored by the Press Club of Cleveland with the award for Best in Ohio Essay Writing in 2018. Dr. Perloff also earned an Excellence in Scholarship Award and Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016. His theoretical article in communication theory won the 2014 University of Amsterdam School of Communication Research McQuail Award for the best article advancing communication theory, and he earned15 first or second-place awards for feature and essay writing from the Press Club of Cleveland and the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists from 2009-19. Dr. Perloff also won a Distinguished Faculty Award for Research in 1999. The Dynamics of Persuasion, Dr. Perloff's scholarly persuasion text, was named Outstanding Book of 1993 by Choice, a division of the American Library Association that published a yearly list of Outstanding Academic Titles. Its 8th edition was released in June 2023.

Dr. Perloff is a frequent contributor to an assortment of news outlets, including Cleveland.com and The New York Times. He has also been published in Academe, the magazine of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

鈥淚t鈥檚 a challenge, but really lots of fun, to write pieces that everyone can relate to, think about, perhaps reflect differently on or disagree with, but maybe, I hope, with a little more understanding of a different view of the issue,鈥 said Dr. Perloff.

Midwestern born and raised

A native of West Lafayette, Ind., Dr. Perloff earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, where he wrote for The Michigan Daily, the University鈥檚 independent student newspaper that has operated for more than 130 years. He would move on to the University of Pittsburgh, Wisconsin-Madison and Ohio State University for his Master鈥檚, Ph.D. and postdoctoral fellowship, respectively, before making his way to CSU as a visiting assistant professor. 聽

"I have been at 精东传媒 for all of my professional life," Dr. Perloff said. "My professional and intellectual affiliation has been here at 精东传媒, where I have really developed as a person, as a scholar and as a writer."聽

Dr. Perloff was continuously selected to take on leadership roles at CSU as the School of Communication evolved. He was elected the final chairperson of the Communication Department in 2003, then became the University's first-ever director of the School of Communication when it officially transitioned from the Department of Communication in 2004. During his seven years as director, the school added three new majors: Film & Digital Media, Journalism & Promotional Communication and Communication Management. 聽

"I never thought I'd really like teaching, but it's infectious; it keeps you healthy and happy, and you hope you do some good," Dr. Perloff said. "You're sharing what you love with students, but you can't be in your world鈥攜ou have to partake in where they are."聽

Renowned for his work in persuasion, Dr. Perloff teaches courses in persuasive communications and attitudes, as well as political communication. He has written a handful of books on the dynamics of news and political communication, including the award-winning The Dynamics of Persuasion.聽

"Persuasion has been one of my loves, having taught the course for decades, making it a mainstay on the grad level, and teaching, I think, the only undergrad persuasion course on campus," Dr. Perloff said. "I love persuasion theory, and so I'll focus on things like tattoos to help students appreciate that attitude objects serve functions or help people cope, a part of attitude functions theory, a classic in the field."

Not surprisingly, excellence runs in the family. Dr. Perloff鈥檚 son, Michael, is an attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington, D.C. His daughter, Catherine, works as a platforms reporter for Adweek, an advertising publication based in New York, N.Y.
聽

From chalk and whiteboards to digital classrooms

Four decades of experience have allowed Dr. Perloff to showcase his talents in connecting different topics and relating them to student experiences in the classroom and beyond, mastering the art of engaging a classroom.

鈥淚f I were to pinpoint what I would consider to be his most remarkable, polished skillset, it鈥檚 his ability to see linkages between different fields of expertise, how what he does can relate to others and vice versa,鈥 said Robert Whitbred, Ph.D., the director of CSU鈥檚 School of Communication.聽

鈥淲hen he鈥檚 giving an example of a persuasion theory, the direct one-to-one match is there and easy for the class to understand. That takes time. That takes expertise. That takes a willingness to continually look for ways to improve and revise things to make it better.鈥

The decades-long Viking has become a maestro during his multiple weekly lectures. He conducts an ensemble of student voices and responses, quickly applying them to real-world scenarios. Even during virtual sessions, Dr. Perloff continuously keeps students involved with discussions and presentations and encourages student answers during lecture times.聽

鈥淗e has been remarkably adaptable to integrating new technologies into his teaching,鈥 Dr. Whitbred said. 鈥淗e does it in a seamless way that is meeting students鈥 expectations for what an effective college course should be.鈥

Dr. Whitbred also noted Dr. Perloff鈥檚 ability to mentor and work with undergraduate and graduate students to produce work and articles that are presented in state, regional and, in some cases, international conferences.聽

鈥淭hat鈥檚 providing opportunities for not only working with students but helping them create the next generation of scholars in the field,鈥 he said.

Join CSU in congratulating Dr. Richard M. And with 精东传媒 University just a short distance from Progressive Field, RocketMortgage Field House and Cleveland Browns Stadium, it makes plenty of sense for students wanting a successful sports career to choose CSU.

精东传媒 first launched its Bachelor of Arts in Sport and Entertainment Management in 2022, the same year Jim Kahler, a veteran of sports administration and education, was hired to serve as its director. The program within the Monte Ahuja College of Business offers options for those with a desire to become more in-tune with the world of sports and entertainment.

鈥淥ur proximity to professional teams like the Cavaliers, Guardians and Browns makes it an ideal place to continue building our already close relationships with our local franchises,鈥 Kahler said.

Gavin Stephens, the director of Talent and Engagement for the Cavaliers, agreed.

鈥淲e鈥檙e in such a unique situation where we have so much talent that is close to us, there鈥檚 no reason not to give CSU students an opportunity,鈥 Stephens added.

Step Up to the Plate, a first-ever CSU student event held before an April game between the Guardians and the New York Yankees, featured a handful of panel speakers from 精东传媒 and the Guardians' front office. The rained-out game didn't damper student spirits as they heard about 精东传媒鈥檚 partnerships with its professional sports teams and the job opportunities that can come with them.聽
聽
鈥淥ur mission at the Guardians is to unite and empower the city of Cleveland through the power of team,鈥 said Colleen Lynch, assistant director of Talent Acquisition for the Guardians. 鈥淚 believe CSU has a very similar mission.鈥澛

精东传媒's Sport and Entertainment Management program has also hosted other student-centered events, such as a career fair with more than 35 organizations, as well as 精东传媒鈥檚 Summer Sport Management Institute, the 精东传媒 and Cleveland Guardians Ticket Sales Ticket Sales Academy and many more initiatives. CSU鈥檚 Cleveland Guardians Recruitment Fair was created for students interested in seasonal positions with the baseball franchise, and the Cleveland Browns 50/50 Raffles sales internships provide students with the opportunity to get hands-on sales experiences and by working with Cleveland Browns Foundation. 聽

A city with a wide variety of options in professional and collegiate sports, Cleveland was also the center of a handful of events during eight epic days that kicked off the month of April. 聽

The Land hosted the NCAA Women鈥檚 Final Four from April 5-7, which featured incredible matchups between South Carolina, NC State, Iowa and UConn. The training camp roster for the USA Basketball Women鈥檚 National Team trained at Cleveland Clinic Courts from April 3-5. The Cleveland Guardians鈥 home opener at Progressive Field was aligned with April鈥檚 total solar eclipse, the first Ohio would experience since 1806.聽

The city of Cleveland has had plenty of opportunities to showcase itself on the national level. The Guardians and Cavaliers both made championship appearances in 2016, with the Cavs hoisting the Larry O鈥橞rien trophy after a seven-game series win over the Golden State Warriors. Cleveland would host the NBA All-Star game in 2022, the NFL Draft in 2021 and the MLB All-Star game in 2019.聽

鈥淎nyone who loves sports would love Cleveland,鈥 Lynch said. 鈥淚t seems, as a Cleveland native, the Cleveland culture is very driven by their sports teams. Cleveland is its own brand here because of the sports teams and how much we鈥檙e rooted in that."

To learn more about 精东传媒鈥檚 Sport and Entertainment Management options, click here.
聽

Tue, 21 May 2024 14:47:25 +0000 6003571 25750 at Student of Distinction: Francieli Vogel /news/student-distinction-francieli-vogel

CSU celebrates graduating students who have overcome obstacles, made significant achievements or are fulfilling 精东传媒 University's mission in or outside the classroom.

Today, we celebrate Francieli Vogel.

CSU: Have you had any significant Internships/Co-ops/Careers while at CSU?

FV: Yes, both!

I gained valuable work experience during a summer internship in 2023 called the Ohio Export Internship 精东传媒. This program focused on supporting small and medium-sized businesses with their international trade endeavors. The college provided us with the necessary training, and we then had the opportunity to put that knowledge into practice during our internships. In my case, the college placed me at LJ Star, a company located in Twinsburg. There, I played a key role in researching and conducting international business operations.

Following the internship鈥檚 conclusion, they even offered me a position until I began my current co-op. I am enrolled in a co-operative education program at Emerson, where I hold the Strategic Supply Chain position. In this role, I am actively involved in all aspects of the strategic sourcing process. Working at a global company like Emerson is a fantastic opportunity for me to learn and develop.

CSU: How would you describe the connections you have made with the faculty and staff at CSU?

FV: The professors at CSU were instrumental in my success with both the internship and co-op programs. They provided exceptional support outside of the classroom. One even went above and beyond by conducting a practice interview online to boost my confidence in the actual interview. Several others consistently shared information about job openings, through email and in class discussions. This proactive approach to networking proved to be incredibly valuable. Because of these experiences, I strongly recommend taking more in-person classes. The face-to-face interaction fosters stronger connections with professors, which can be hugely beneficial.

CSU: How has 精东传媒 inspired you for your future?

FV: CSU inspired me to constantly work and invest in myself and my knowledge. The professors do not just talk about the theory; they brought the real world into the classroom.聽 Clearly, they cared about our futures, guiding us towards successful careers and pushing us to reach our full potential.

CSU: How do you think you have fulfilled the CSU mission (empowering others, creating knowledge, engaging our community and shaping our world)?

FV: Many people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, struggle to see their full potential. Limited exposure to different realities can make dreams seem out of reach. As an international student from Brazil, from a really small community, I can relate. Studying at an American university felt like an impossible aspiration. My dedication and strong academic record led me to be part of the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Continuing Scholars 精东传媒. This prestigious program provides financial, academic support and invaluable leadership and humanities development support.

My journey at CSU has fueled my passion to inspire and empower others from similar backgrounds. I actively volunteer in underprivileged communities, and I try to share my academic life with everyone around me. Education is a transformative force; it unlocks opportunities and empowers individuals, and I try to motivate everyone to pursue their academic life.

I also would like to thank the supply chain department. Initially, I solely focused on an international business major. However, thanks to the inspiring supply chain professors at CSU, my academic journey took an enriching turn. Their passion for the field ignited a desire in me to delve deeper into this fascinating area. As a result, I decided to complement my major by adding a minor in Operations & Supply Chain Management and I am currently working in the same field.聽

Congratulations, Francieli!

Tue, 21 May 2024 11:13:31 +0000 6003456 25748 at [Video] Dr. Laura Bloomberg: YWCA Woman of Achievement 2024 /news/video-dr-laura-bloomberg-ywca-woman-achievement-2024

Each year, the YWCA Woman of Achievement Award is presented to a select group of Northeast Ohio women who have achieved extraordinary accomplishments through career success, community service, leadership and mentoring, as well as dedication to YWCA鈥檚 mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

Among those receiving the 2024 award is 精东传媒 Univeristy President Dr. Laura Bloomberg.
